Pirms 30 gadiem, 1989. gada 23. augustā, apmēram divi miljoni Latvijas, Lietuvas un Igaunijas iedzīvotāju sadevās rokās, izveidojot dzīvu ķēdi 670km garumā cauri visām trim Baltijas valstīm, tādējādi pievēršot pasaules uzmanību saviem brīvības centieniem un iedvesmojot arī citas nācijas, nu jau bijušās padomju republikas, neklusēt, bet celties un rīkoties.
Svētdien, 22. septembrī, plkst. 12.00 baltieši un viņu draugi aicināti pulcēties laukumā pie Luksemburgas filharmonijas, lai atcerētos šo nozīmīgo notikumu un pēc īsa koncerta izveidotu paši savu Baltijas ceļu. Ja jums ir tautas tērps, velciet to mugurā, paņemiet līdzi karodziņus un neaizmirstiet paņemt līdzi groziņu piknikam, kas notiks pēc oficiālās daļas.
22. septembris šim notikumam nav izvēlēts nejauši - šobrīd šī jau oficiāli tiek uzskatīta par Baltu vienības dienu. Tā izvēlēta par godu 1236. gada 22. septembrī notikušajai Saules kaujai, kurā žemaišu un zemgaļu apvienotais karaspēks iznīcināja apvienoto krustnešu karaspēku. Šogad arī aprit 100 gadi kopš leģendārajām Cēsu kaujām, kad 1919. gada jūnijā latvieši un igauņi kopā izcīnīja izšķirošu uzvaru savu tautu brīvības cīņās.

We melted the iron curtain…
Thirty years after the Baltic Way (Chain) that captured the attention and imagination of the world, we are only starting to fully comprehend the importance and impact of that courageous event across the Baltic States. On 23 August 1989, for the first time in their lives, young Balts started to believe that their voice has power and that their lives could change. The Baltic Way expressed the power of Idea, Solidarity and Participation. As the rest of the world watched, many in other soviet republics and satellites gained strength to stand up, speak and act. The Berlin Wall was yet to fall. With the Baltic Way, we Balts melted the iron curtain…
On Sunday 22 September at noon, all Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians in Luxembourg are invited to join in a commemoration of this famous and world-changing event. After a short concert we will form our own Baltic Way (or chain) near the Philharmonie (a similar event will be taking place in Brussels). Put on your national costumes (if possible), bring your family and friends along and don't forget your national flags (small ones are good enough)! And last but not least - bring your own picnic!
Why 22 September? This is known as Baltic Unity Day when the joint pagan Samogitian and Semigallian forces decisively defeated the Livonian Brothers of the Sword in the 1236 Battle of Saule. This year we also commemorate the centenary of the Battle of Cēsis when in June 1919 the Estonians and Latvians together fought a battle that was decisive in the Estonian and Latvian Wars of Independence.
